Former Premier League footballer Danny Mills has urged West Ham United to strike a deal for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud following a lack of movement over his possible switch to Inter.
Earlier this month, Sky in Italy reported that the Frenchman had agreed personal terms with the Italian giants, though he remains a Chelsea player with the two clubs as yet unable to agree a fee for the World Cup winner. Speaking to Football Insider, Mills suggested that West Ham should be in the running for a striker of his quality, with a successful approach simply a question of persuading the 33-year-old to move to the London Stadium.
Asked if West Ham should bring Giroud in, he said: Yeah, and [Sebastien] Haller has had some injury problems as well, hasn’t he? Giroud is a fabulous player and West Ham are on the brink of a little bit of trouble, and Giroud, who can hold the ball up, [with] his out-and-out quality, if you can get him – if he wants to come to West Ham, this move all depends on what Giroud wants.
“Where does he want to go? That’s what it’s all about. There will be plenty of suitors lining up to take him. Chelsea may be willing to do a deal regarding the loan fee or the player’s wages etc., but this is down to Giroud.”
Should West Ham sign Giroud?
Having played in the Champions League and Europa League ever since his arrival in England, Giroud may be forgiven for not being tempted by a possible relegation dogfight in east London. That said, with a switch to Inter hanging in the balance and a European Championships on the horizon, Giroud may have to take drastic action with France manager Didier Deschamps previously ordering him to find first-team football.
At West Ham, that could be achievable with compatriot Sebastien Haller failing to live up to his £45m price tag so far with just six goals to his name following his latest blank against Everton and the Hammers still perilously close to the drop zone in the second half of the season.
With Inter seemingly struggling to finalise a deal, Giroud’s situation would almost certainly play into West Ham’s hands, though Mills is probably wise to note that the Frenchman probably holds all the cards, here.
