TalkSPORT reporter and West Ham United fan Ian ‘Moose’ Abrahams is strongly against his team bringing former midfielder Dimitri Payet back to the club, following rumours suggesting the Hammers were interested in a reunion with the Frenchman.
According to L’Equipe (via Daily Mail), West Ham have reportedly registered an interest in sealing a return for the 32-year-old, who scored 12 and assisted 15 in his one and only full season at the club, which came in their final campaign at Upton Park that saw the Hammers qualify for Europe after a 7th-placed finish in the Premier League. However, Abrahams was fully against West Ham sanctioning a move for a player who had left the club in the manner in which he did.
He told TalkSPORT: “He decided that he didn’t want to play for West Ham. He went on strike, Slaven Bilic came out honestly and told everybody: ‘This guy doesn’t want to play for West Ham anymore.’ Then he left – and now West Ham thinks that’s the answer.
“Are you really telling me there isn’t another footballer on the planet that can help West Ham get out of trouble? There is no way that Payet, if he comes back, is going to keep West Ham up because he’s not a defensive player, he doesn’t track back and help out.”
Will David Moyes be West Ham manager this time next year?
Assuming that there are other players out there to save West Ham from relegation, it appears Abrahams is desperate to see Payet remain in France – or at least, away from the London Stadium.
His record for the club, particularly in the 2015/16 campaign, speaks to the level of opposition that Abrahams has regarding such a U-turn, though Payet had hardly picked up where he left off in the following season – with just two Premier League goals before his January departure in 2016/17 (albeit alongside a respectable seven league assists).
It seems that forgiveness is not an option for Abrahams – and a number of other West Ham fans. And considering the Hammers’ current plight, for them to be quite so vociferous suggests a Payet return would no go down totally well in east London.
