Former Sunderland and Crystal Palace striker Kevin Phillips has urged Brazilian Matheus Pereira to not join West Ham in the summer following a successful period in the Championship at West Bromwich Albion.
The Hammers are looking to revitalise their squad after another hard season in the Premier League sees them struggling near the bottom of the division and were linked (per Football Insider) with a move for the player
Indeed, Pereira has managed 16 assists in the league this season, scoring six goals along the way, per Transfermarkt.
When speaking to Football Insider about the transfer rumours, Phillips said, “Everyone is going to be looking at players in the Championship who are flying and who have done well. No surprise there. That is credit to the player for performing.
“It is this stage of the season where these rumours can work to unease a player or put doubt into his mind. Only Pereira knows where he will want to play next season. I hope it is with the Baggies in the Premier League.
“When a player has helped a club get promotion you often see them stay because they feel happy and wanted because that is usually the case.”
Pereira’s parent club Sporting Lisbon will reportedly ask West Brom for a fee of around £8 million, if they want to sign him permanently in the summer, per Football Insider.
Even though he is currently playing in the division below, the Brazilian’s stats stand out compared with West Ham’s attacking midfielders Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals, per WhoScored. Offensively, he has more goals, assists and is fouled more per game. What stands out, however, is his shots per game (2.2), which is over one more than both the Hammers players, and his key passes per game (2.5) which is over 0.9 more.
These stats highlight not only the attacking intent the Sporting Lisbon loanee brings to the Hawthorns, but also the confidence he has in his role there. After all, the Baggies are looking as if they’ll be able to return to the Premier League when this season resumes, so it’s not as if there’s any huge reason to leave the club.
With that in mind, Phillips looks right.
West Ham fans, would this signing be an exciting addition to the club? Comment below!
