Former England international Paul Robinson has admitted that he has been left underwhelmed by the performances of West Ham United midfielder Pablo Fornals this season.
The Spaniard joined the Hammers from Villarreal for £24 million in the summer (BBC Sport) and plenty was expected of him after he played a starring role for Spain in the under-21’s European Championships, scoring two goals and providing one assist in five appearances (Transfermarkt).
However, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper feels that he has failed to live up to the billing so far and has admitted that he hasn’t really been impressed with what he has seen from the midfielder.
Speaking about Fornals’ displays this season, Robinson told Football Insider: “He [Fornals] has been disappointing and you’d expect better.
“At times you actually forget the amount of money that they paid for him and the expectation that he came in with. But you can tell that David Moyes isn’t going to stand for average or mediocrity.”
Robinson certainly has a point here, Fornals performances so far simply haven’t been good enough when you consider that he cost the club £24 million.
Indeed, in 22 Premier League appearances so far for the Hammers, the 23-year-old has scored just one goal and has provided just three assists (Transfermarkt).
For a creative midfield player those numbers aren’t great and when you delve deeper into the stats things don’t look any better for the Spaniard. In the league this season on average he plays 0.6 key passes and takes 0.7 shots per game, whilst only 48% of his attempted dribbles are successful (SofaScore).
No matter which way you look at it, Fornals is clearly not performing well enough for West Ham this term. As Robinson says, David Moyes will not accept the poor displays and he has already shown this by hooking the Spanish playmaker at half-time in their FA Cup tie against West Brom (Transfermarkt).
He will need to get his head down and deliver some better performances soon, or he will find himself on the bench more often than not at the London Stadium.
