In his quest to complete his version of a perfect midfield, Manuel Pellegrini has seemingly found the ideal person to fill the holes to have appeared in West Ham’s midfield during his first season in charge at the London Stadium.

Indeed, the Chilean reportedly has his eyes set on Barcelona’s Andre Gomes, whose redeeming season at Everton would probably have shocked a lot of people who wrote him off after a tough season as a Barcelona player in 2017-18.

Pellegrini is seemingly urging the Hammers to get him signed immediately and according to reports (via Guardian), they’ve upped their bid to £20 million for the Portuguese midfielder. That is apparently two million more than what was their initial offer, which was swiftly rejected as the La Liga giants look for £25m.

Well, West Ham need to be careful here.

Granted, Gomes had a really good season in the Premier League, putting in some strong performances in which he dominated some top midfielders. And, yes, the report does state that they do fear missing out on him due to a believed preference to play for Everton, but there should be an element of caution.

Frankly, Pellegrini needs to ask himself whether Gomes is better than what he has. He sure isn’t better than Declan Rice, who’s established himself as the Hammers midfield engine. Indeed, even Mark Noble’s industrial nature and Jack Wilshere’s natural talent make comparisons difficult. No one is doubting the fact that he'd improve the squad but is it worth blowing what would be a huge chunk of their reported £30m (Football.London) budget?

No, it really wouldn't.

West Ham’s latest offer should be their last. Time to move on.
