TalkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham has expressed his bemusement after rumours of a potential return to West Ham United for Dimitri Payet were not met with widespread positivity from the Hammers faithful.
Though when speaking on TalkSPORT about the club’s current situation, Durham spelt out the dire straits West Ham find themselves in as they bid to stay afloat in the Premier League, and described his confusion over why some fans were so averse to a possible Payet reunion with the club threatened by relegation to the Championship.
He said: “In terms of style of football, there is nothing that’s been added to the West Ham squad so far, and games are ticking by. Meantime, in this window, they’re being linked with [Marouane] Fellaini, Ross Barkley and Dimitri Payet – and all the fans are getting really angry about the Payet link. He’s better than what you’ve got, so why wouldn’t you want him back?”
Do you trust West Ham to spend in January?
West Ham’s current position in the Premier League would certainly suggest that incomings could be a great deal of help in their bid to survive the drop under David Moyes.
While some fans feel needs must, it seems that the supporters’ negativity stems from the animosity surrounding Payet’s departure, with the club’s then-manager Slaven Bilic revealing he was refusing to play for the club back in January 2017, before sealing a move to Marseille at the end of that month.
So it appears a quick internet search could have answered Durham’s (most probably rhetorical) question, though his stance suggests he feels Payet would certainly be of use to the club at present.
Now 32, Payet is still a regular starter for Marseille and six of his eight goals this term have come since mid-November, so he seems to be in decent form. Though while Durham may be right to suggest he would benefit the club, it looks as if fans’ opposition to his return regards other matters.
