West Ham finally picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 win over Everton at the weekend.
The Hammers returned to Premier League action following the international break rooted to the bottom of the table following a dismal start under Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean had splashed over £100m on new recruits during the summer, but their early form suggested the former Manchester City boss could be in line for the sack. However, the former Real Madrid manager repaid the board’s faith with an excellent win at Goodison Park.
Pellegrini handed new signing Andriy Yarmolenko his first Premier League start, and the Ukrainian quickly proved how dangerous he could be. The winger netted two goals in 30 minutes with Marko Arnautovic making sure of three points in the second half. While Yarmolenko flourished, Carlos Sanchez struggled immensely in the centre. The Colombian midfielder is not the defensive midfielder that West Ham fans needed in the summer.
Instead, the Hammers should make an audacious move for Lyon start, Lucas Tousart, when the window reopens. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the anchorman is considered one of the brightest talents emerging in France after breaking into the Lyon first-team at the age of 21. Tousart made 37 Ligue 1 appearances last season and has started all five of Lyon’s games in the new campaign.
The youngster is the perfect defensive midfielder to provide some much-needed protection to the Hammers back four. Tousart loves to get stuck in and averaged an incredible 2.9 tackles per game last season – more than any other West Ham player. He also reads the game expertly and averaged 1.9 interceptions per game; again more than any other Hammers player managed last year (WhoScored).
Landing Tousart would be a real coup for the East Londoners and could be the catalyst for their ascent up the Premier League table.
