Jack Wilshere scored his first competitive goal for West Ham United to get them on their way to a 2-0 victory over Newport County in the Carabao Cup.
The goal came in the 43rd minute, when his pass to Albian Ajeti was intercepted, but he was in quick enough to steal the ball back from Kyle Howkins and slot it into the bottom corner, as shown in the highlight video on the Sky Sports Football YouTube channel.
Not only was this significant because it was his first goal, but it was also an important moment in the game, as he broke the deadlock against what had been a very resolute side:

Wilshere struggled during his first season as a West Ham player, making just four starts and four substitute appearances in the Premier League, as per WhoScored.
However, with the 27-year-old having started three of West Ham’s four games in all competitions so far, there is certainly reason for optimism.
This goal should do him a lot of good as he carries on working towards establishing himself in a claret and blue shirt.
A selection of Twitter reaction to the goal, including posts from enthused West Ham fans, can be seen below:
I never lost the faith. My midfielder.
