Winston Reid could be set to make his return from injury when West Ham United U23s play Wolfsburg in the Premier League International Cup, as reported on the club’s official website.
The defender has had to miss various games this campaign and pre-season when he was expected to make his return.
Speaking about the 31-year-old, Manuel Pellegrini said: “It’s not easy to be more than a year and a half without playing a game, but he’s a strong man. He’s always working and I hope that this coming week he will play without any problems the game with the U23s.”
Reid hasn’t played any competitive football since coming off 27 minutes into a 4-1 loss against Swansea City in March 2018, as per Transfermarkt, and this week passed 600 days without first-team action.
The 31-year-old was given a chance in pre-season to show that he could prove his ability and fitness to Manuel Pellegrini, as reported by Football.london at the time, which is likely partly due to the fact that he has represented the club 223 times since joining from Midtjylland in 2010.
He had been set to make his return for the U21s against Cheltenham Town, that was eventually lost 4-3, but he missed out due to a knock, as reported by Football Insider at the time.
It is important for Reid that he is able to play a part in this game and get through it, having been out for so long and already having suffered setbacks this season.
There will likely be a lot of importance placed on this game in terms of his confidence, but he does also need to begin showing the club that he will be able to make an impact for them.
