Premier League

This is where West Ham United really need to strengthen (not up front)

If there was ever a performance this season to highlight West Ham’s weaknesses this season, it was last time out against Manchester City.

The Hammers hosted City at the London Stadium on Friday as the FA Cup 3rd round kicked-off and they were duly humiliated in front of their own fans.

The Citizens battered the Irons 5-0 in a display, on the host’s part, that smacked of awful defensive organisation and bluntness in attack – their whole season in a nutshell.

The east London side have really struggled in front of goal this campaign with Simone Zaza being one of the worst signings in a long time and Andy Carroll once again suffering with injury woes.

It’s in defence, though, where they really need to improve in this window – particularly at right back.

Whilst the likes of Aaron Cresswell down the left and Winston Reid in the centre are decent Premier League players there’s a real void of quality down the right and that’s caused all manner of problems.

Alvaro Arbeloa has not had the impact West Ham had hoped

Sam Byram has had fitness issues whilst Alvaro Arbeloa has looked completely over the hill and that’s led Slaven Bilic to try all manner of things to work it out – none of which have stuck.

Whilst the club’s striking issues are important, too, they can be solved with the likes of Carroll and the young Ashley Fletcher about but clearly this season, they have no current answers down the right side of defence.

Bilic has toyed with a back three or played a huge variety of different players in that role when really what he needs to do is buy a new quality option.

The Hammers need consistency and regularity – as they did last year – and until they sign a new right sided defender, they won’t be getting anywhere near the heights of 2015/16.
