Leicester fans in the Transfer Tavern are praying for a miracle and have everything crossed that Riyad Mahrez will turn down the advances of Manchester City and stay at the club.
The Algerian winger submitted a transfer request back in January, but City weren’t willing to meet the Foxes’ valuation. With the window now officially open, the Citizens have rekindled their interest. The Premier League champions are believed to be close to sealing a £60m deal for the 2016 PFA Player of the Year according to the BBC.
While Mahrez’s departure will hurt Claude Puel’s side, but £60m is a tremendous amount of money that can be injected into the playing squad. A replacement for the winger will be a priority given his importance to the side in recent years. Leicester have been linked with a move for Lazio winger, Felipe Anderson, but the Brazilian has struggled for consistency.
Instead, they should attempt to lure Michail Antonio from West Ham. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the Englishman has struggled for fitness this season, making just 21 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals. He is a versatile option, capable of playing at right midfield, right back or as a striker.
He is nowhere near as technically gifted as Mahrez, but Antonio is a terrific athlete. The 28-year-old is blessed with lightning quick pace and is physically imposing. The forward is great in the air and would add another dimension to the Foxes attack if he can put his injury troubles behind him.
