None other than David Beckham has been named as a target for the Hammers this summer. New manager Avram Grant is in the process of rebuilding his squad following their desperate relegation fight last season and will bid to bring ‘Golden Balls’ back to the UK from LA Galaxy.
It seems mighty strange that a club with such well-documented financial problems and who are still in the process of cutting cuts would want to sign a player on such a substantial salary but co-owner David Sullivan is actively trying to convince Becks to move back to his East End roots.
Chelsea’s Joe Cole was another high-profile name being banded about during the week before the England international resolutely turned down the opportunity to rejoin the club he left in 2003. Cole will be a free agent in the summer but curiously does not think that West Ham can offer him the challenges of Champions League football that he yearns for.
Grant has put in a £3m offer for Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne who played under him last season at Portsmouth. The Frenchman, who has also been attracting attention from Fulham and Blackburn, has been told that he is free to leave the Champions League semi finalists and is understood to be champing-at-the-bit to link up with his former manager Grant.
The Hammers are also interested in signing Cardiff midfielder Joe Ledley and Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies.
