Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side go down 1-0 to Burnley on Monday night, thus suffering a fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s side went into their clash with the Clarets off the back of a three-match unbeaten run, having drawn against Liverpool and Southampton before narrowly beating Crystal Palace 1-0 in their preceding outing. However, they were unable to build upon that victory as a Jeff Hendrick strike 16 minutes from time deservedly secured Sean Dyche’s side a 1-0 win at Turf Moor, in turn moving them above the Magpies into seventh place in the Premier League table.
Thus, several of our resident Newcastle fans have been very quiet in the Tavern this week, although many are indeed looking forward to putting Monday’s result behind them when they host Eddie Howe’s struggling Bournemouth at St James’ Park this weekend.
Yet there has been some important news which has kept those hardy Magpies supporters interested in the Tavern this week, not least the announcement of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for friendlies against Germany and Brazil in the coming fortnight.
The likes of Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Joe Gomez have all been given call-ups by the former Middlesbrough chief, yet there was no room for Newcastle duo Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey, both of whom have made impressive starts to the new season.
And news of their absence has stimulated quite a response from Magpies supporters on Twitter, many of whom are furious and ultimately disappointed by the decision…
Loftus cheek getting an england call up while shelvey dosent is absolutely astounding

Lascelles & shelvey are bang in form and dont get a look in. Some of the players in that England squad are useless. #NUFC

For an England team lacking leaders, strange that Lascelles is not in that squad. Captaining newly promoted side to 4th best defence. #nufc
