What a player: Fans pay tribute to Steven Gerrard as Liverpool legend announces retirement

There’s not a dry eye in the entire Football Transfer Tavern…

After a long and storied career – Steven Gerrard has officially announced that he has retired from professional football.

First joining Liverpool’s youth setup in 1987, Gerrard would eventually make his first team debut in 1998 – and little did the Anfield crowd know what was about to take place.

In a near 20 year career with the Reds, Steven Gerrard would cement his legacy as the best player to ever wear Liverpool’s famous red shirt – going on to captain the side during a period of sustained success in the mid-2000’s.

Whilst the Premier League remained elusive for Gerrard, numerous other trophies including the FA Cup and the Champions League would make their way into his trophy case.

After leaving Liverpool in 2015, Gerrard went to the MLS and enjoyed a successful run with LA Galaxy – before leaving the US within the last few weeks.

His decision to retire was expected in the Football Transfer Tavern, but it has still come as a shock to our punters – many of whom are touting him as the Premier League’s greatest ever player.

Our landlord wants to find out if this sentiment is one that is shared around the world, so he has taken to Twitter to see how fans are reacting online.

With that said, here are 6 of the best fan reactions to Steven Gerrard’s retirement…
