The possible flash point of the Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez handshake thankfully fizzled out to nothing but was eclipsed by a nasty tackle and some handbags between Jonjo Shelvey and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The tackle was not a good one and neutrals would have every right to argue that both Shelvey and Evans might have been sent off on another day. Referee Mark Halsey looked to be out of his depth and the delay in making his decision – presumably because he wanted to speak to his colleagues – only served to aggravate the situation.
Shelvey Tweeted after the match: ‘I apologise to the fans for getting sent off but no way was I pulling out of that tackle in a game of that importance. I’m sorry.
‘I have also apologised to Sir Alex, just where I come from people don’t grass people up to get someone sent off.’
So what was said? Please bare in mind we not only have a swear filter but we also don’t tolerate hate.
The route to take here is the witty, humourous one.
