Unless you’ve been hiding under a particularly massive rock all day, you will, by now, have heard the news that Wayne Rooney has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United, keeping the striker at the club until 2015.
Cynical ploy to get more of those much-needed cash monies, or Sir Alex’s oft-cited man management skills kicking in? Only Rooney (and possibly Paul Stretford, Fergie, Gill and other insiders) will know, but that doesn’t stop us speculating, now does it? On the surface of it, it seems as though the former would be more likely. Rooney is now reported to be raking in as much as £180,000 a week, which is around £30-40k more than was being mentioned when contract negotiations first came about. In which case, hats off to you, Mr. Stretford, you cancer on the beautiful game.
The latter suggestion seems less likely. If, as the striker formerly known as Wantaway Wayne would have you believe, his wantaway status derived from a purported lack of ambition at his club, then that would take some spectacular persuasion/bare-faced lying from Team Fergie/Gill. What could they possibly have said? “Wayne, you know the other day when we told you we’re skint and won’t be making any decent signings? Well, turns out we’re actually gonna get Benzema, Diarra, the late John Charles, the Lord Jesus Christ and whoever else you want. There’s the dotted line, son…”
Such is the modern game, I guess. What do you make of it? And more importantly, United fans, are you forgiving him any time soon? And what of this man’s IQ?
