In an extremely disappointing Premier League campaign, Aaron Mooy was once again the bright spark at Huddersfield Town.
In the end, though, it was obviously not enough, with the Terriers being condemned to the Championship.
Mooy, however, will not be joining Jan Siewert‘s men in the second tier of English football if Southampton get their way.
According to The Sun (via Goal), Ralph Hasenhuttl is interested in bringing the 28-year-old to St. Mary’s this summer in what could be a very smart move.
Looking at his squad, Hasenhuttl is already blessed with some quality options in the middle of the park.
The likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Mario Lemina and Oriol Romeu, for example, are all solid choices to have.
But perhaps Hasenhuttl is looking for more creativity in that engine room, something Mooy will feel he can offer.
“I like to get on the ball and pass it forwards, try and create chances,” Mooy told FIFA.com (via Examiner Live) when talking about what he can bring to a team.
The Australia international certainly has confidence in his ability, and he is not the only one.
“Aaron Mooy is playing amazing this season and we are glad at that,” were the words of Pep Guardiola (Manchester City’s official club website) as he praised the former Manchester City loanee for his performances with Huddersfield during the 2016/17 season.
“It is not easy coming from Australia and going to the Championship and play as good as he is.”
Hasenhuttl has predicted a “difficult summer” for Southampton (Sky Sports). But if the south coast club can land Mooy early in the window, then there is reason to be optimistic.
