What does the future hold for Ademola Lookman at Everton?

He’s too good to be sat on that bench every week, isn’t he? While Everton continues to look rather uninspiring at times in attack this season, Ademola Lookman still gets overlooked for a regular starting role at the Toffees.

Lookman has not had an easy ride at Everton this season. Following a very impressive stint at RB Leipzig for the second half of last season whereby he amounted five goals and four assists in just 11 Bundesliga appearances, he would have hoped to kick on under Marco Silva but it took nearly two months of the season to gain over 50 minutes of game time in all competitions.

The 21-year-old eventually looked to have finally built up to regular substitute appearances in a blue shirt when he was called upon for a weekly 20-30 minute cameo to try and change the game. Lookman largely shone brightly in his appearances as he was direct in his approach and troubled the opponents’ backline.

He was unfortunate to then suffer an ankle injury over the festive period but even when returning, further faith was placed in him to perform as he started four times across January, amounting a goal and an assist across the Premier League and FA Cup.

Since that spell of form though, Lookman has featured just three times off the bench for Everton, sometimes even finding himself out of the matchday squad including the team for the Merseyside derby, which Silva had confirmed to the Echo as being a tactical decision.

Even still, considering that Theo Walcott has looked lacklustre in attack all too often this season and he has 23 league starts compared to Lookman’s three, is it not time that Silva gives him a regular run of games?

As a mid-table finish looks a certainty and with no cups to challenge for, there is no harm giving Lookman a run of starts once again to see if he can build up consistency in his starting appearances and continue to trouble defences throughout the game.

If he is not provided some opportunities to try and impress as well as positively impacting the side, he should look elsewhere for regular game time.

Lots of outlets, including Goal, had reported that Southampton were targeting a move for the England under-21 international in January. Their manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl, could work with Lookman again as they did at Leipzig if they attempt to sign him in the summer, which could prove to be a fantastic move for his development.

If he does not get the game time at Everton, he will surely have lots of club’s willing to fork out for his services in the summer.
