For now, West Ham United’s midfield structure is set up pretty nicely.
Mark Noble is leading with typical aplomb, while Declan Rice is adding bite and energy to the Hammers’ midfield. Indeed, their performances have almost made fans forget about Carlos Sanchez, who after suffering a terrible injury earlier in the season, is yet to have appeared again in claret and blue
Sanchez was brought in last summer for £4.1m (as per Transfermarkt) to solidify West Ham’s midfield with his steely presence. However, he didn’t really manage to impress for the Irons in his sporadic appearances before suffering an injury against Macclesfield Town. Indeed, Sanchez struggled under the intensity of the Premier League (despite having played here before, somehow), making Manuel Pellegrini take his time with giving him minutes.
Things weren’t necessarily easy for him then. Now, recovered from a bad knee injury, it’ll be even more difficult for him to assert himself in the team.
However, a ray of hope might beckon him next season.
Like it or not, Rice’s fantastic performances almost guarantee transfer interest in him this summer while Noble is also running out of legs. This can be a perfect opportunity for the Colombian to prove his ability and slide back into the fray.
Sanchez’s hard-working ability is the prominent reason as to why he was signed last summer. While not the most lavish player in the world, the ex-Aston Villa ace is a tough-tackling, relentless figure in midfield who can protect his defence pretty well, win possession and get the ball forward.
Obviously, the 33-year-old isn’t the youngest but can use his experience to be a decent squad player under Pellegrini. After such a big injury, it won’t be easy for him to play week in, week out. But Sanchez’s fiery ability makes him an asset against intimidating opposition going forward.
It’d be unfair for Pellegrini to give up on Sanchez now. Despite his injury problems, he’s still an impactful player who works his socks off for his team and can be an asset to bolster the Hammers squad next season.
