What does the future hold for Mateo Kovacic?

What does the future hold for Mateo Kovacic?

Chelsea supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side make it five wins out of five in the Premier League at the weekend.

Maurizio Sarri’s men went into their clash with newly-promoted Cardiff City off the back of victories over Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Bournemouth to make an outstanding start to the campaign, and thus underline their intentions for the season ahead. Yet they fell behind at home to Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds thanks to Sol Bamba’s opener, only for a hat-trick from Eden Hazard alongside a Willian strike to seal a routine 4-1 victory for the Blues, thus maintaining their 100% start to the season.

Thus, there have been many thrilled Chelsea fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been looking back at their side’s busy summer transfer window, which saw the likes of Jorginho, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Mateo Kovacic make the move to Stamford Bridge.

And the addition of the latter on loan from Real Madrid is a particularly interesting one, as it seems that the Croatia international faces a make-or-break season in West London this term.

Ultimately, the 24-year-old made the move to Bernabeu back in 2015 after seriously impressing in a two-year stint at Italian giants Inter Milan, and he has since gone on to feature 109 times for the three-times defending European champions, helping them to repeated Champions League success as well as the La Liga title back in 2017.

However, he hasn’t always been a regular in the Spanish capital with just 21 league appearances to show for his efforts last season, while the fact that they were willing to loan him out to Sarri’s Chelsea for the entirety of this term underlines his position in the pecking order.

Nonetheless, with Madrid teammate and compatriot Luka Modric 33 now and having been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu during the summer, Kovacic may well sense an opportunity to finally command regular football at the Spanish giants.

Add in the fact that Chelsea boss Sarri has already suggested that he’d like to keep the 24-year-old permanently after his loan spell finishes at the end of the season, and it’s pretty clear that there is a lot riding on the Croat’s performances for the Blues this term – produce the goods, and there could be several opportunities come the summer, yet failure to do so could leave his future far from certain.

And he has made an encouraging start to life at Stamford Bridge in starting three of their five Premier League games and appearing in each of their last four, although he suffered an injury problem against the Bluebirds at the weekend which cut short his afternoon on 50 minutes – although it has since been confirmed that the injury is not a serious one.

Prior to that though, Kovacic produced arguably his best performance in a Chelsea shirt against Warnock’s men at the weekend, which stands him in good stead ahead of what appears to be a make-or-break season for the 24-year-old.
