What does the future hold for Danny Welbeck?

Yet another product of the Manchester United academy, Danny Welbeck’s career hasn’t quite lived up to the hype that surrounded him when he made his debut for the club.

The forward had a somewhat average career at Man U and had only really been used a squad player under Sir Alex Ferguson. Indeed, his highest goalscoring tally was nine, a tally he reached twice for Man U.

He joined Arsenal in 2014 for a £16 million fee late on deadline day and after falling down the pecking order at United following the arrival of Radamel Falcao. Providing Arsenal will depth up front, he didn’t have the best of seasons at the club in his first year as he’s scored four goals in the league.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, like at Man U, Welbeck has failed to live up to his potential. He has the pace, physicality and work rate to be a top-level forward but as of yet, we haven’t seen that often enough.

Last year he scored five goals in 28 games and was used mostly as a back up to Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

As it stands, the England international is in the final year of his contract and so far it’s unknown whether The Gunners will offer him a new deal. In Unai Emery’s Arsenal side, it’s unlikely that he’ll start ahead of Lacazette and Aubameyang in the league.

In Europe, however, he presents an ideal player who can be used on the wing or up front in place of Arsenal’s dynamic duo. Moreover, as a squad player, he presents the option of a player that has exceptional work rate, who can also pick up a goal or two.

Although he may not be a key player for Emery, it might wise for Arsenal to sign him to a new deal to keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.
