What does the future hold for Fred at Manchester United?

Manchester United’s 3-1 Premier League defeat to first-placed Liverpool, which has left them 19 points behind their rivals, proved to be the final straw for the Old Trafford hierarchy who yesterday decided to part ways with Jose Mourinho.

And while Mourinho is not solely to blame for the Red Devils’ misfortunes this season, he can have no complaints with how things have gone down.

Certain transfer targets were not acquired, but over £300m was still spent on new players during his tenure with £45m-rated (Transfermarkt) Fred being the latest big-money acquisition.

Fred joined from Shakhtar Donetsk over the summer for a £52m fee as Manchester United saw off competition from rivals Manchester City (FourFourTwo). However, the Brazilian has seen little action of late and, when he has featured, he has underwhelmed considering he arrived at Old Trafford dubbed as the new Fernandinho.

At Shakhtar, he showed a lot of energy and tenacity in the middle of the park which helped him earn the above tag and thus gave the impression that Manchester United would be getting just that: their own Fernandinho.

Yet that has been far from the case with the 25-year-old unable to oust the likes of Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera, two of the most limited midfielders in the Premier League who have had their struggles this term, out of the starting XI.

With all of that being said, it is still too early to write off Fred who has plenty of time to come good. And a change in manager could just be the thing needed to kick-start his Manchester United career.
