Since arriving at West Brom on loan from Leicester City in the summer, Harvey Barnes has only gone from strength to strength.
The 20-year-old has made a brilliant start to life in the Championship at the Hawthorns, recently scoring a terrific solo goal to help his side salvage a 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
Barnes’ displays, overall, have been impressive to say the least and have seen him earn a first time call-up to the England U21 squad with space available after James Maddison and Mason Mount’s promotion to the senior set up.
But as well as gaining recognition from England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd, Barnes has also caught the attention of his parent club.
According to Press Association Sport (via Leicestershire Live), Leicester are ready to recall their midfielder in January in a move that is risky but could also yield reward.
Given how Barnes has performed so far this campaign, he is definitely a player who would add to Claude Puel’s squad.
In his appearances in the Championship, Barnes has looked extremely dangerous in areas just outside the box where he has been able to unleash threatening shots towards goal.
With that in mind — even though he is capable of playing in midfield and out wide — Barnes’ best position in this moment of time is probably just behind the striker.
But with the form Maddison is also in, it is not a spot in the team that £1.35m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Barnes will be able to walk straight into.
That being said, should Puel feel that is an area of the squad that needs strengthening come January and he can offer Barnes minutes there or even elsewhere on the pitch, then the idea of recalling the Leicester youth product should not be ruled out.
In the long run, Barnes’ development is probably best served at West Brom, an environment that can provide him with guaranteed playing time.
The attacking midfielder, though, certainly has the ability to come in at Leicester and make an impact if given the opportunity.
Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see Barnes back in a blue shirt in a couple of months time.
