West Ham underwent a huge summer rebuild in 2018 as the board looked to put last season behind them, with a summer spending spree and the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini giving the Hammers faithful genuine reason to be optimistic for the future.
The club broke their transfer record twice as they signed Felipe Anderson and Toulouse centre-back Issa Diop. Both have players have been superb since joining the east London club and in Diop, it looks as though The Hammers have signed a future star.
Highly regarded during his time in France, Diop was an instant regular in the side since making his debut at the age of 18. In his final season for the south of France club, the giant defender played 34 games and has so far been a constant in the West Ham since joining the club for a £22 million fee.
Despite West Ham’s fairly inconsistent start to the season, Diop has begun to blossom over the last few weeks. Against Tottenham, he had his best game for the club as the dominant defender was a one-man rock at the back and luckily for West Ham, the 21-year-old reduced the number of shots on goal and helped keep the score to 1-0.
The Frenchman is also underrated with the ball at his feet and it looks as though he’s formed a solid partnership with Fabian Balbuena.
By today’s standards, £22 million for a defender with the potential of Diop is incredibly low. He has the potential to be a star in the league and if he continues this form, West Ham could have a star on their hands. Unfortunately, in a few years, we could be seeing him move away to one of the top six sides, such is the enormity of his talent.
