What does the future hold for Jack Colback at Newcastle?

It’s fair to say that there is a bit of bad blood between Jack Colback and Newcastle manager Rafa Benítez.

This was well documented last season as the two verbally sparred regarding the midfielder’s treatment at the club by the Spaniard.

Colback was left out of the Newcastle squad for the Premier League and was forced to train with the under-23s. This culminated in him moving to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest in January on loan, and has extended that loan for this season as well.

But it seemed as though there was so much more to come from the 28-year-old when he made the infamous move from bitter rivals Sunderland in 2014. Colback was a relatively young midfielder, with a lot to give to The Magpies. But his progress was cut short after the arrival of Benítez at St James’ Park.

Now it has reached a point where it seems very unlikely that he will be able to find his way into the Newcastle team as long as the former Liverpool manager is at the helm. Unfortunately for him, despite how badly Newcastle are doing this season, it is very hard to imagine a scenario whereby the manager is sacked. Colback has to simply wait for the former Champions League winning manager to move on his own accord, and no one knows how long that will be.

For now, Colback is doing well at The City Ground with Nottingham Forest. He is playing regularly there, and The Reds are having a fairly decent season in the Championship. He is the heartbeat of the team there in defensive midfield and could find many club seeking him at the end of the season.

But the reality is, and he surely knows this, he will have to move on from his beloved Newcastle at the end of the season if Benítez is still there. However, his stint at Nottingham Forest is proving the perfect opportunity to keep himself in the shop window, and he could well be back in the Premier League next season.

Indeed, considering he and Benitez have previously fallen out, it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine that Colback wouldn’t mind seeing the Spaniard axed, so he can keep his Newcastle career arrive.
