With Timo Werner seemingly edging closer to the Red Bull Arena exit door, a pathway into the starting XI could be about to open up for Jean-Kevin Augustin at RB Leipzig.
Should he not be given any guarantees ahead of the new season, though, it would not be a surprise to see the 21-year-old also follow Werner out of the Bundesliga club.
Augustin continues to be linked with a move to Southampton (Daily Mirror via Tribal Football), and a transfer to the Premier League outfit could be one that really benefits him.
The Frenchman is in search of more minutes, something his former boss Ralph Hasenhuttl would certainly be able to give him at St. Mary’s.
Augustin, who has played his best football under Hasenhuttl, would have a great opportunity to become the Saints’ first-choice striker as Danny Ings continues to struggle with injuries.
And from Hasenhuttl’s perspective, should Southampton be able to get a deal over the line for his ex-player, he would have the ideal No.9 for his style of football.
“He has got qualities, he is quick, can score and is used to the high-pressing methods we use, so that would help him if he would be here,” the Southampton boss told Sky Sports when speaking about Augustin back in January.
Ultimately, considering what both parties want, Augustin and Southampton look like a match made in heaven.
