What does the future hold for John Bostock?

What does the future hold for John Bostock?

Crystal Palace supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been somewhat deflated in recent times after seeing their side lose each of their last three Premier League matches.

Roy Hodgson’s men began the 2018/19 campaign with a 2-0 win at Fulham but have since lost all three of their league matches to sit 15th in the table at this very early stage of the season. The Eagles played well but ultimately went down 2-0 at home to Liverpool in their second game of the campaign, before losing 2-1 at high-flying Watford last weekend, and the Londoners suffered another loss on Saturday in going down 2-0 at home to Mark Hughes’ Southampton.

As such, there have been some disappointed Palace fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by the progress of ex-Eagles star John Bostock, who left Selhurst Park a decade ago in 2008 to join London rivals Tottenham.

But after a testing time at White Hart Lane, which for him came to an end back in 2013, it appears that the man who annoyed the Palace board is finally getting back on the right track.

Ultimately, the 26-year-old came up through the ranks at Selhurst Park having joined the Palace academy at the age of just six, before going on to make his senior debut for the club at the tender age of 15.

Yet he managed just four further first team appearances for the Eagles before joining Tottenham in the summer of 2008, which itself did not happen without its controversy, what with Spurs announcing his arrival on their website, only for Palace to release their own statement denying a deal had been agreed.

It eventually resulted in a tribunal between the two clubs to work out a fee for Bostock, but the damage was seemingly done given former Palace chairman Simon Jordan revoked both his and indeed his stepfather’s season ticket at Selhurst Park – it was a sad way for a local boy to end his time with the Eagles.

Things didn’t go to plan at all at Tottenham, with the midfielder managing just four first team appearances for the North London club, and upon leaving there in 2013 his career has since taken him all over Europe, be it stints in Belgium with Royal Antwerp and OH Leuven, in Turkey with Bursaspor, or indeed in France with RC Lens and current employers Toulouse.

For someone clearly so talented and so highly-rated by Palace when he was growing up, it has been something of a sad decline for the 26-year-old, yet things have been somewhat better in recent times given he scored 11 times for Leuven to help them win promotion to the top-flight in Belgium back in the 2014/15 season.

And with seven goals for the club in the top tier the season after, it was clear that Bostock was beginning to find some of his best form, from whom he then joined Lens in the summer of 2016 to play his trade in the French second tier.

The midfielder is now at Ligue 1 side Toulouse having signed for the French outfit earlier in the summer, thus reuniting with manager Alain Casanova having worked together at Lens, as the former England youth international seeks to finally get a career going, a career that promised so much prior to his unceremonious exit from Palace a decade ago.
