Sunderland have been one of the standout performers in League One this season, but they still find themselves trailing the likes of Luton Town and Portsmouth.
The Black Cats will be desperate to secure promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking under Jack Ross, with the January transfer window helping their cause.
However, the Wearside club secured one of their current stars without even having to splash the cash back in 2015, as they secured an agreement with Josh Maja after Manchester City decided against offering him a scholarship.
Of course, this was a big contract blunder by Man City as they could have signed one of the most promising strikers in English football to a scholarship.
Indeed, the Englishman has come on leaps and bounds in the current campaign at the Stadium of Light, with 12 goals and two assists to his name in all competitions. He has played a huge part in the Black Cats’ promotion push in League One as one of the league’s top scorers, and will be sure to help them through the festive period.
So, having come from the depths of despair as a youngster, to now attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, it just goes to show that Sunderland picked up a gem back in 2015, who they could be set to earn millions from if he ends up departing in the January transfer window.
