What does the future hold for Kenedy?

It feels like a long time ago that Kenedy arrived at Newcastle United to save them from a potential relegation scare.

In his first six months, he was a menacing figure down the left, skipping past defenders and also creating chances at will. Brilliant, brilliant stuff.

Fast-forward to almost a year later and he’s struggling to even start games. Rafa Benitez’s been forced to change up his system with the Magpies recently, shifting to a more defensive 3-5-2 formation. This has worked wonders into inspiring his side to avoid relegation and finish the season strongly, but Kenedy’s consistently poor performances mean his future is worryingly unclear.

The 23-year-old’s suffered a worrying dip in form since extending his loan at Newcastle, with one after another poor performance losing Benitez’s patience in him. The Brazilian’s poor defensive display, coupled with regular mistakes which have cost the Magpies was a big reason for Benitez replacing him with Matt Ritchie on the left.

He’s only scored and assisted 1 goal apiece this whole season, proving erratic with his crosses and outsmarted by defenders. Indeed, no one will forget THAT performance against Cardiff City. In a very, very bad way.

Clearly, the Magpies almost certainly won’t keep him and as it seems, he has no future at Chelsea either. While talented, he’s not done his prospects of staying in the Premier League much good at all.

The Brazilian’s just not consistent enough going forward or much solid defensively to keep up with the intensity of the league. With all due respect, there’s a reason he’s been farmed out on loan to a middling Premier League side, after all.

Maybe a move to the Bundesliga or La Liga could do him some good. Playing at a club who emphasis more on going forward than the defensive work, he could maybe regain his lost spark. Time is running out for the Brazilian to prove his talent. He can either become another talented player who makes Chelsea regret letting him go or become another forgotten loanee.
