What does the future hold for Laurent Koscielny?

What does the future hold for Laurent Koscielny?

Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny has made his long-awaited return from the Achilles injury he sustained at the end of last season.

Since that injury, the centre-back has seen his country win the World Cup, a new manager arrive at The Emirates in Unai Emery, and seen The Gunners go on a lengthy unbeaten run.

He has also seen the arrival of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and the emergence of Rob Holding at Arsenal. This should be something that worries him. While the latter is now out for the season with an ACL injury, the former seems to be developing a partnership with Shkodran Mustafi.

What’s worse for the Frenchman is that Arsenal are rumoured to be plotting defensive signings in January. This leaves him in a very precarious position, as the club already seem to be planning for the future without him.

As good a servant as Koscielny has been for Arsenal, it is understandable if Emery wants new blood in his new era at Arsenal. At 33 years of age, the 51-cap international will not be a part of Emery’s plans going forward, and is more likely to be an inconvenient vestige of the previous Arsène Wenger regime. We have already seen this season how Emery treats those from the previous manager, as the likes of Mesut Özil have struggled on the bench.

While The Gunners do look particularly sparse when it comes to their centre-backs, if they do recruit new faces in January, it seems more than likely that the veteran Koscielny will be on his way out. The Emery revolution is happening, and he seems to have no time for the old guard- and Koscielny’s one of them.
