What does the future hold for Lewis Baker at Leeds?

Chelsea have a huge amount of players out on loan at one time, and, as a consequence, there are plenty that fall by the wayside.

One of those players looks to be Lewis Baker. The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Championship side Leeds, but hasn’t looked particularly impressive. He is clearly not one of the favourites of manager Marcelo Bielsa, and has therefore only had a handful of starts all season. The Argentinian has primarily preferred Kalvin Phillips in the centre of the field, and Baker has had to play second fiddle. Even when Phillips has been deployed as a centre-back, Baker still has not been given the nod to deputise in the midfield. This should be a worry for Leeds and Chelsea.

However, just because a player is having a bad loan spell at a club, it doesn’t necessarily mean that their future is over at their parent club. But it is the fact that he has only ever played in one FA Cup game for Chelsea which suggests that he has never really been a priority at the club.

Furthermore, it is the age of Baker which suggests that his Chelsea future is not particularly bright. The club have so many young players out on loan who are not only performing better than him, but are also much younger too. Mason Mount is a clear example of this, being three years younger than Baker. But there are also players within Chelsea that are younger than Baker and already much more established names, such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is a year younger.

Therefore, there has been nothing by Baker to ever suggest that he will be able to break into the Chelsea team. While Leeds are certainly one of the best performers in the league this season, Chelsea would expect a player that is hoping to break into their team one day to perform in the league below.

The Blues already have a wealth of talent in the midfield who are currently at the club, with some big names struggling for game time. Given the fact that there are players out on loan that can’t get into the Chelsea team, Baker is even behind them in the pecking order. It seems an impossible task for him.

Furthermore, it is not even clear if he has much of a future at Leeds as well. It would seem bizarre if the club chose to sign him at the end of the season given the fact that he has barely featured. It would be even stranger if The Whites make it into the Premier League and sign him, as that is very likely to be a step too far for him. He may be a Championship player, but his future does not seem to lie in Leeds, and definitely not in Chelsea.
