Liverpool failed to extend their lead at the top of the table on Monday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham United.
The Reds will be desperate to ensure consistency from here on in until the end of the season, as the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are now within touching distance.
However, it appears as if the Merseyside club turned their attention towards the summer transfer window recently, as according to La Repubblica (via ESPN), Liverpool have already made an offer of around €70m (£61.5m) for Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne.
Interestingly, the Italian was once compared (as per Sky Italia) to Lionel Messi back in 2012 by former team-mate Goran Pandev.
“I got to know him in pre-season at Dimaro, he’s a great kid and we all saw what he is capable of in the win over Bayer Leverkusen,”
“Insigne is a strong player and he has personality. He reminds me of Messi in the way he plays and dribbles, even if Messi is the best in the world.”
“I think he has a chance to have a career like the Barcelona phenomenon.”
It’s safe to say that the 27-year-old has certainly displayed moments of brilliance just like the Barcelona man in recent years, so it comes as no surprise that Liverpool have reportedly made a big offer for the attacker.
Lorenzo Insigne is arguably one of the most dangerous attackers in world football as his skill, pace and dribbling ability makes him almost impossible to tackle. The Italian can operate on either wing or in an attacking midfield role, so he would be of great use to the Reds, especially as they’re still yet to replace Philippe Coutinho.
He currently has 11 goals and six assists to his name in all competitions this season, which includes his winning goal against Liverpool in the Champions League group stages.
FSG have already helped build one of the world’s best attacks at Anfield in recent years, but securing the services of Insigne would make the Reds’ attack untouchable as he has the ability to take them up a level. His ability to find the back of the net and produce assists would give the opposition another thing to worry about, as well as providing the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino with another world-class attacking outlet to feed off.
