Liverpool’s road to the Champions League final was founded upon the foundations of a solid defensive unit with Lorius Karius in goal and, to the surprise of supporters and pundits alike, he was incredibly solid and reliable – until it mattered most, of course.
Indeed, Karius struggled to impress the supporters during the early stages of his career, but after being installed as Liverpool’s number one ahead of Simon Mignolet at the beginning of 2018 he appeared to be moving in the right direction.
The confidence which Klopp showed in the German stopper clearly had the desired effect has he grew in stature and confidence with every passing performance before he blew his Liverpool career on a damning evening in Kiev.
Two ghastly mistakes cost Liverpool dearly as Real Madrid clinched their 3rd Champions League trophy in a row and, just when Karius was beginning to look like a trustworthy goalkeeper, he effectively forced Jurgen Klopp’s hand.
Liverpool took their time before forking out £67 million to bring Alisson to Anfield, but it was a signing which appeared inevitable from the moment Karius allowed Bale’s speculative long-range effort to squirm through his grasp and defuse any late threat of a Liverpool comeback.
With Karius (valued at £10.8 million by Transfermarkt) effectively surplus to requirements, the Reds allowed him to embark on a two-year loan deal with Besiktas as the transfer window edged towards its conclusion in the summer.
However, Karius’ woes continued recently as he made yet another blunder in the Europa League against Malmo during a 2-0 defeat.
Whilst there is no doubting that Karius is a quality goalkeeper on the whole, regular mistakes have tarnished his reputation and ultimately the regularity of his errors have tarnished his reputation.
And with Alisson already looking like a huge upgrade on Karius – even with his blunder against Leicester in mind – it’s impossible to see any sort of future for the 25-year-old at Anfield and he will undoubtedly be sold once his loan deal with Besiktas reaches its conclusion.
