A relative unknown when he made the move to England, Marco Silva quickly established himself as a very good coach during his time with Hull City.
After being tempted by the Everton job last year, Marco Silva finally got his wish ahead of this season as the Toffees brought him in to take up the now vacant managerial job. The Portuguese manager was part of a huge rebuild of the club as under the new money of Farhad Moshiri, the Toffees spent heavily in the summer as they brought in the likes of Yerry Mina, Angel Gomes and free agent Bernard.
With the arrival of the manager and the heavy spend over the summer, expectations are high at Goodison Park. At the moment the club hasn’t quite lived up to the hype, and if this form continues, serious questions could be asked.
Working with a squad that always looked set to be relegated, Marco Silva almost managed to keep Hull City in the league in 2017. Notably, the former Olympiacos manager registered wins against Man U in the EFL Cup while also beating Liverpool in the league, a win which would give the coach four wins out of four at home.
Following the side’s relegation to the Championship, Silva was left and took up the Watford job. Much like his start at Hull City, Silva started well at Watford and went unbeaten in his first four league games and lost just one of his first eight at the club. Such was his impressive start to life at Watford that Silva was heavily linked with the then vacant Everton job. Seemingly as a result of the speculation, Watford’s form dropped massively and the club only managed five points from 30 and won only two of their next 12 games in the league.
Such was the club’s poor form that it led it to the club sacking the manager in January. With Sam Allardyce now at the helm at Everton, Silva had to wait until the end of last season to finally get his chance at the Merseyside club and so far, he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype.
Despite bringing in an array of talent, Everton have had a fairly poor start to the year as the Toffees currently sit 12th in the table and have only won one game in the league. Now at the job he wanted last year and with the talent that he has, if Silva doesn’t perform well this season, the pressure could be on. Everton are trying to break into the top six and if he doesn’t get them there, he’ll have failed.
