The upcoming January transfer window could see plenty of Premier League stars coming and going. A lot of players could do with freshening up their surroundings and one of those is Mohamed Elneny. The Egyptian midfielder has been exiled under Unai Emery, featuring just four times this season, with none of those coming in the Premier League.
When Emery was appointed he instantly identified the centre of his midfield as a problem area and signed both Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi to bolster The Gunners’ options there. The pair of midfield newbies have pretty much killed any chance that Elneny had of making it at Arsenal, even though things did look quite bright for him when he initially signed for the club under Arsene Wenger in January 2016.
The 26-year-old midfielder was brought in from Basel almost two whole years ago now, and whilst he managed to bag his first goal for the club against Barcelona a few months later and has never really had a bad game for the club, it’s pretty settled that he won’t ever be a nailed on starter and would be better off leaving the club to play first-team football elsewhere. That’s where Leicester City come in, as the club would be the perfect destination for him.
Rumours surfaced around a week ago that Emery was looking to offload Elneny in January, and The Foxes were the mentioned team, as the club looked to raise funds to try and make a swoop for Villarreal’s young midfielder, Pablo Fornals, according to The Sun. However, Elneny then came out and claimed that he was 100% committed to Arsenal’s season this year and wouldn’t be leaving in January, via The Leicester Mercury.
If the midfielder is to revive his career then he will quickly need to eat those words. If he stays at The Emirates this season and avoids a January exit then it will be hard to see a way for him to get his career back on track. A move to Leicester would be perfect too, the Foxes look to play good football and have good enough players at the club already to see Elneny slot in and thrive alongside some talented players who would definitely be able to bring the best out of the Egyptian.
In midfield, Leicester already have the likes of Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Vicente Iborra and Nampalys Mendy, so adding Elneny will only bolster their options and help them as they strive to cement themselves as a consistent top ten team. Puel would be pulling off a masterstroke in signing the Arsenal man too, seeing as the consistency that he brings would be perfect for the club on their way to finishing the season strongly.
