What does the future hold for Moussa Sissoko at Tottenham?

If Tottenham fans were given the option of selling Moussa Sissoko at the beginning of the season, the mother lode of fans would have opted to part ways with him.

The midfielder failed to impress in north London since signing from Newcastle in 2016, as he looked a shell of the man that tore Euro 2016 apart with his rampaging runs for the French. Simply put, he failed to live up to that potential for two seasons, and it was beginning to look like a terrible signing from Daniel Levy.

However, in what seems like a blink of an eye, Sissoko has elevated his status at Tottenham from ‘disastrous flop’ to ‘cult hero’, as he slowly accrues more and more supporters. In November, he was arguably Spurs’ best player, as Mauricio Pochettino deployed him as a central midfielder. His Herculean performance against Inter Milan at Wembley at the end of November typified his month and his resurgence to the forefront of the Argentinian’s plans for the club.

With Mousa Dembélé injured, and struggling for form, as well as the perennially injured Victor Wanyama, there is certainly a place for the 29-year-old Sissoko in the heart of The Lilywhites’ midfield. It has come unexpectantly, but his energetic style suits the style of football that Pochettino wants to play. He has been used as an attacking midfielder, and even as a right-back whilst at the club, but he now looks to have found his role.

What does seem strange are his recent comments to French outlet Foot Mercato, whereby he said that he does not see his future at Tottenham. That came at the worst possible time, and he may well regret such comments giving his recent upturn in form.

Comments aside, Sissoko has made one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent years, from being such a pariah to a fan favourite. He can be an example to any struggling player in the Premier League, and can look forward to a much more promising future.
