What does the future hold for Moussa Sissoko at Tottenham?

When Tottenham brought in Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United back in 2016, it looked like a bizarre signing to say the least.

And when you see the Frenchman with a ball at his feet, it still does. Technically, the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele are all significantly better players, meaning it was always going to be a struggle for him to get into the side in either attack or midfield.

This season so far, however, Mauricio Pochettino has been using the 29-year-old from the get-go with the injury of key figures playing its part in the Argentinian’s decision.

But even so, after largely being on the periphery, Sissoko now looks like he has something to offer to this Tottenham team.

Sissoko is never going to be able to score double figures like Alli or open up a defence like Eriksen. But what he does provide the side with is energy either out wide or from the middle of the park.

With that in mind and considering Tottenham’s hectic schedule, it is not hard to understand why Pochettino has turned to the France international at times during this campaign.

Going forward, Sissoko certainly has to work on the technical side of his game if he wants to remain in this Tottenham squad.

No one is asking the former Newcastle man to start Cruyff turning opposition defenders, but he can at least ensure the simplest of passes actually get to his team-mates.

On paper, Sissoko was an underwhelming signing and probably still is to most supporters. But with Tottenham clearly unable to do much in transfer markets, Pochettino needs to make use of everything he has, which he is currently doing.
