When Manchester United signed Nemanja Matic from Chelsea last summer, many people deemed it as a game changer.
The Serbian was seen as the missing piece of the puzzle in Jose Mourinho’s midfield; the man who would finally give Paul Pogba the licence to roam and do damage in the final third.
In essence, Matic’s arrival at Old Trafford was supposed to be the last ingredient needed for the Red Devils to mount a serious title challenge.
However, in the end, that turned out to be far from the case with Mourinho’s men finishing 19 points behind champions Manchester City.
Obviously, that 19-point gap cannot solely be pinned on Matic, who by no means has been a disastrous signing for Manchester United.
At the base of midfield, the Serbia international has done most of his job pretty effectively, often breaking down opposition attacks with tackles and interceptions.
Rather, where the problem lies with Matic and what has made him such an overrated addition to the squad is when he is in possession of the ball.
The 30-year-old can, at times, dwell on it for too long before being dispossessed in a costly area of the pitch, while his passing range is extremely limited.
His lack of pace also means once an opposition attacker gets past him, his only means to stopping them is to commit a foul.
Going forward, if Manchester United want to truly progress as a team, a team capable of challenging their rivals Manchester City, then Mourinho has to upgrade on Matic among other players in the team.
Central defence has, of course, been of huge concern to the Portuguese coach, who spent the whole of the summer chasing a new centre-back.
That, along with Matic’s defensive midfield position, are just two things Mourinho desperately needs to address if the good times are to come back to Old Trafford under his watch.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
