At Chelsea, manager Maurizio Sarri has failed to settle on a first-choice striker with neither Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud managing to convince the Italian they are worthy of a permanent starting berth.
In recent weeks, though, things have slightly picked up for the former after he managed to net in games against MOL Vidi FC, Southampton and most recently Burnley to take his total tally of goals for the season to four.
Giroud, on the other hand, has failed to register at all this campaign. And with just one year left on his contract, a potential move to London rivals West Ham is something that has been touted (via Daily Mirror).
The possibility of leaving Stamford Bridge, though, should not be an idea crossing the Frenchman’s mind right now because he can still easily become Chelsea’s first-choice No.9 in this current season.
Morata has managed to get himself on the scoresheet in the Blues’ last few games, but he has still been far from convincing.
Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United, in particular, was just another fixture where the Spaniard was constantly bullied off the ball and his weaknesses were exposed.
Too often, Chelsea’s attacks breakdown due to Morata’s incapability to hold up the ball, and the 26-year-old certainly is not scoring enough goals to make up for such complacency up front.
In contrast, Giroud’s hold-up play is borderline world-class with the Blues’ star man Eden Hazard praising his team-mate as “the best target man” in the game right now (via Sky Sports).
If the World Cup winner can start adding the odd goal here and there to complement his overall work up front, then there would be no reason for Sarri to persist with Morata.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
