What does the future hold for Oriol Romeu at Southampton?

Ralph Hasenhuttl will have to solve a lot of issues at St. Mary’s following his appointment as Southampton manager.

One department, though, where the former RB Leipzig boss should not have too many problems with is the Saints’ midfield.

In what has been a dire season under the recently sacked Mark Hughes, the likes of Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have provided the team with some spark in the centre.

And of late, Stuart Armstrong has managed to give Southampton supporters some excitement with his fantastic finishes against Manchester United and Fulham, further putting into perspective what Hasenhuttl has to work with in that area of the pitch.

One midfielder, however, who has not been able to make much of an impact this term is Oriol Romeu.

Having become a key figure in this Southampton side since his transfer from Chelsea back in 2015, the Spaniard has been left on the periphery by Hughes this term.

By no means, though, is Romeu surplus to requirements. In fact, he is a player who could prove to be extremely useful to Hasenhuttl.

With the Austrian expected to bring a more attacking style of football to St. Mary’s, Romeu may be the individual needed to ensure the Saints have some balance.

The 27-year-old is obviously a different type of midfielder to Lemina and Hojbjerg, who are both very good technically.

While the duo are at their best when they are on the ball, Romeu’s game is all about making tackles and interceptions, which could be crucial in Southampton’s attempts to not constantly get caught out on the counter under their now more attack-minded manager.

Considering that, Romeu might just get a second chance handed to him by Hasenhuttl. And the former Chelsea man certainly has the ability to grasp it.
