What does the future hold for Robert Snodgrass at West Ham United?

West Ham United spent heavily during the summer transfer window in an attempt to enjoy a successful first season under Manuel Pellegrini at the London Stadium.

The Hammers drafted in 10 players during the summer transfer window that included the likes of Issa Diop, Felipe Anderson and Jack Wilshere, who have all gone on to impress so far this season.

However, this left some of the current squad fearing for their future in the Premier League under Pellegrini, with a limited amount of space for players to break into the starting XI.

Joining West Ham United on the 27th of January 2017 for £10.2 million from Hull City, Robert Snodgrass, struggled to adjust to life at the London Stadium under Slaven Bilic as he failed to score in his first 15 games for the club, which forced the Hammers into sending him out on loan to Aston Villa.

The winger enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career at Villa Park as he managed to find the back of the net eight times and produced 13 assists in what was a very successful loan spell. A permanent move to the Midlands could have been in the offing during the summer, but Villa’s financial problems got in the way of a potential switch.

Manuel Pellegrini has kept his faith in the midfielder this season and continues to rotate him in and out of his starting XI in the Premier League, due to a number of injuries. The likes of Manuel Lanzini, Jack Wilshere, Andy Carroll, Andriy Yarmolenko and Carlos Sanchez are all out injured at this moment in time.

But, he just hasn’t managed to repay Pellegrini’s faith this season as he is still yet to score his first goal in the Premier League since joining the club, with his standout performances coming in the EFL Cup.

So, with the Hammers starting the season poorly and still struggling for consistency at this stage, the 31-year-old’s lack of contributions is certainly not helping the cause and is one of the main reasons behind their troubles.

With the Hammers desperate to secure a European spot and ensure some consistency under Manuel Pellegrini this season, it’s important that the club thinks about offloading Snodgrass to make room for more quality and players to come back from injury, with a spot on the bench looking unlikely when everyone is fit and ready.
