What does the future hold for the Maurizio Sarri’s midfield partnership?

Maurizio Sarri made a fantastic start to life in west London as his side started the season unbeaten until they were thrashed by Tottenham.

Only two games later, they were handed yet another loss as Wolves beat Sarri’s side 2-1 despite leading the game. Following their initial loss, a lot has been said about the long-term potential of Chelsea’s midfield duo of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. As he’s proven over the last few years, Kante is one of the best midfielders in the world and is the best at winning the ball back.

With such a proven track record in England, when Kante was shifted into a midfield three with Sarri’s arrival, it seemed as though the World Cup winner may become a square peg in a round hole under Sarri.

During his time with Napoli, Sarri had a midfield three anchored by the pass master, Jorginho. When the Italy international arrived over the summer, he was instantly inserted into that position again. Jorginho has quickly become one of the best passers in the league and as it stands, he has the second highest amount of passes in the league.

With Jorginho in the middle of midfield, a lot of emphasis is placed on the two central midfielders either side of him to get forward. Many have argued that Kante can’t play that role due to his inability to be effective in the final third, with even Sarri commenting that the France international is not technically good enough to play in midfield.

While he may not be prolific going forward Kante has to play every game for Chelsea. His work rate off the ball is just superb and he is essential in covering for Jorginho, who isn’t the best at covering the defence.

Yes, Kante does need to improve his production in front of goal but the future of Chelsea, lies in playing him and Jorginho together. If Sarri can bring in another midfielder who can form a trio that works perfectly together, Chelsea will instantly improve. Moreover, as seen by his time with Napoli, Sarri had Allan who was tasked with being the energetic dynamo and Marek Hamsik who got forward more often.

Kante and Jorginho will work but Chelsea fans must be patient as it probably won’t be an instantly fruitful partnership.
