Our resident West Ham fans here in the Transfer Tavern thought they were going to sign Adebayor yesterday, but that wasn’t the case.
Adebayor’s career is in limbo after his proposed move to West Ham fell through last night with him being unable to agree a termination of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Mirror.
An outcome that has left our resident West Ham fans here in the Transfer Tavern quietly annoyed, with many of them yesterday talking up the potential impact the Togo striker could have for them in the coming season.
Having signed Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea earlier in the day, West Ham had filled their domestic loan quota – the other being Carl Jenkinson from Arsenal, and they could only sign Adebayor on a permanent deal.
It is understood Tottenham had offered to cancel his £100,000 a week contract to enable him to move on a free transfer but Adebayor insisted they pay him the remaining year of his contract – a fee totalling over £5m, which Spurs flatly rejected.
Adebayor looks to have been frozen out by Tottenham over the summer and has not even been given a squad number by Spurs this season.
However Tottenham’s inability to bring in a recognised striker during the transfer window, after having four bids for Saido Berahino turned down by West Brom, has left them short of options upfront to help Harry Kane. This may mean that Mauricio Pochettino has to call Adebayor back into his squad – at least until January, to help share the goal scoring burden.
