Early into his loan spell at AC Milan, and Tiemoue Bakayoko was looking like one of the worst Serie A signings of the summer.
After a disastrous year with Chelsea, the 24-year-old joined the Italian giants for the season as he looked to get his career back on track.
At Stamford Bridge, Bakayoko really struggled in the middle of the park to say the least, and such a theme looked like it would continue at the San Siro.
Fast forward to now, though, and that has been far from the case. Following a rocky start to life in Italy, Bakayoko has since gone on to become an integral figure in Gennaro Gattuso’s side.
All things considered, the Frenchman is probably now playing at the same level he was playing at during his AS Monaco days.
Yet even so, as far as a future at Stamford Bridge goes, things still look bleak for Bakayoko as long as Maurizio Sarri remains in charge.
With the France international, who is valued at £31.5 million (by Transfermarkt), not being the most technical of midfielders, it is difficult to see where he could possibly fit in.
In this Blues team, Jorginho is the undisputed No.1 at the base of midfield, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovacic will continue to battle it out for that more attacking role on the left.
That leaves just N’Golo Kante on the other side, which is a non-starter for everyone at the club.
In a cover capacity, having Bakayoko in the squad for that position does not sound like the worst idea.
But with the former Monaco man unlikely to accept being just a squad player and Sarri quite clearly not keen on him, a permanent transfer away from Stamford Bridge could now be in everyone’s best interest.
Chelsea fans, what you do you think the future holds for Bakayoko?
