Ralph Hasenhuttl has done a lot of good work at Southampton since arriving in December with the Saints picking up some big results under the Austrian.
What stands out most about this Southampton side since Hasenhuttl took the reins, though, is how well coached the players now look both in an individual and collective sense.
And the development of Yan Valery easily epitomises that. The 20-year-old has been a revelation in recent weeks, earning a new long-term contract after an array of impressive performances.
“Already you can see Yan has improved defensively, and his goals against teams like Manchester United and Tottenham are big signs of how much his confidence has been growing,” Hasenhuttl told Southampton’s official club website following Valery’s contract extension.
“Players like Yan are the future of Southampton Football Club, not just the present, so I am very pleased for him and for us that he has signed this new contract.”
Playing as a right wing-back, the defensive improvement Hasenhuttl has spoken about has been there for every Southampton supporter to see, while the Frenchman is also carrying an attacking threat in the current role he is playing in.
His strike against Manchester United was fantastic before the equaliser he knocked passed Hugo Lloris in his side’s recent 2-1 win over Tottenham.
Selected ahead of Cedric Soares before the Portugal international’s loan move to Inter Milan, Valery is clearly a player Hasenhuttl has a lot of trust in.
And it is not hard to see why. In the former France U18 international, Southampton could have one of the leading right-backs for years to come.
