What does the future hold for Yannick Bolasie?

Yannick Bolasie was once one of the most talked about names in the Premier League.

The Congo international built a name for himself with Crystal Palace as a pacey winger with magical footwork. He moved to Everton in 2016 for £25m in what was supposed to be bigger and better things.

However, his career at Goodison never really took off. During his two seasons there, he was blighted by injury and could barely string a run of games together. He joined Championship side Aston Villa on loan this summer in the hope of reclaiming his form that had made him such a force a few years prior.

Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, his career at Villa Park did not take off at first under Steve Bruce. However, the arrival of Dean Smith has seen Bolasie feature more and more regularly, and he is starting to look a threat again.

The 33-cap international has now got three assists in his last four games for Villa, and has been at the heart of a rejuvenated Villa team. This was a necessity if he ever hoped to revive his Premier League hopes.

The truth is, Bolasie will surely know that he needs to continue at the level he is at, or even improve, if he ever hopes to make it back to the Premier League, let alone to Everton. If not, there is a slim chance that he would be able to work his way into a team in the bottom half of England’s top division, but it may be more likely that he cements his place as a Championship player. At 29 years of age, he may be past his peak, and may have an uphill battle to work back to the top.
