After the news that Arsenal have just churned out a ₤56 million profit this year, Arsene Wenger has inexplicably stated – in an equally puzzling choice of TV interview with Al Jazeera – that Arsenal will not buy any big names this January or in the Summer.
We ask one question: Why the hell not??
With Arsenal sat 2nd in the league and with a possible daunting schedule of 11 games in 34 days, why would Wenger not strengthen his squad, especially as he has the money and is in a position to buy, both financially and with a strong campaign so far. Still in four competitions and with a mouth-watering tie against Barcelona in the Champions League in February to come, is Wenger just being stubborn? Or worse, just plain old tight?
He may have solved his goalkeeping problems but don’t Arsenal still need a towering centre-back, a strong midfield enforcer and a goal-machine striker? And wouldn’t a marquee signing be just the tonic for disillusioned Arsenal fans who desperately crave a trophy and success once again?
We can understand being careful with money, what with the recession and all, but come on Wenger, put your hand in your pocket and buy someone. Anyone will do, even the next Bendtner or Jeffers might grab you that goal somewhere down the line.
Is is so he can have that perfect excuse lined up when it all goes boobs up in March? Don’t be a martyr Arsene.
