Grown men get tears over it, little kids inevitably cry about it but over the next six weeks, gradually, three clubs will be relegated from the Premiership to the Championship. Who knows, we could have another “Survival Sunday” on our hands and not know until the final whistle blows on the last day of the season as to who we are saying goodbye to. I much prefer it that way!
So here are the three teams that I think will go down, or to put it more appropriately- two teams that I want to join the one team that is virtually in the Championship. That leads me nicely on to the first club that you will all know who I am talking about:
Portsmouth- poor, poor Pompey. I feel sorry for the fans, not so much the club. Last night’s 5-0 hammering they received from Chelsea, David James adding to his catalogue of errors…it’s all getting a bit silly. They find themselves 14 points behind 17th placed West Ham and even though they will want to play for pride their Premiership story is over and we might not see them back for a long time.
Burnley– so they beat Manchester United and that is the highlight of their season but this is a team that has only got a single point away from home- that is relegation form. They play good football but they just don’t have the quality, and are not doing the basics well- hence the leaking of so many easy goals. Appointing Brian Laws looked a hurried decision and the fans must be wondering if he was the right man for the job.
Bolton Wanderers– another Lancashire club but even though they look a long shot to get relegated you just never know in this topsy-turvy season. For some reason the Reebok Stadium is hardly more than half full when surely they could do with the fans backing. They have a difficult run-in where they will be playing Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham.
