West Brom target Bakary Soro is in the news yet again. All I ever hear is Bakary this, Soro that, I’m bloody sick of it, I cant escape him, even a quick trip to fetch some milk is interspersed with kids ‘hollering’ his name, a giant billboard displaying his infamous mug and…what do you mean you’ve never heard of him?!
Well, I hadn’t either (or maybe you had, you smug little know it all). So, briefly, who the hell is he and what does he want?
Born in Anyama, Ivory Coast, the 24-year-old defender has played much of his career in France, firstly with FC Loreint and now with current club Arles Avignon. He’s since established himself as an important and sturdy player at Arles, helping them achieve promotion to Ligue 1 last season. However his performances still didn’t quite earn him a place in Sven’s Ivory Coast squad for the World Cup, though he insisted “I am confident of forcing my way into the side for the African Cup of Nations in 2012.”
You may, may, also recall his name in association with Charlton a few years ago; he was in England with the Addicks but couldn’t secure a work permit to play in the league.
It now seems Robert Di Matteo is looking to secure his services in a bid to strengthen his defence ahead of a gruelling Premier League campaign. However, I’m not quite sure how happy Baggies fans will be focusing on bringing in an unproven central-defender, when it was my understanding that cover at full-back was of greater necessity and top-flight familiarity could be important.
Still, he will certainly be a very cheap option – seemingly the way it’ll have to be – could be a surprise revelation and would, at least, add cover.
So, that’s who the hell he is, and West Brom is where he may soon be. Remember the name! …erm, you know, thingy, that Ivorian kid…
