Who The Hell Is This…Tomas Kalas Fella?

Chelsea have dipped their little tootsies into the transfer pool for the second time this summer. Having recently secured the signing of Yossi Benayoun, young Czech defender Tomas Kalas is also Bridge bound. But who the hell is this fresh faced thespian?

Well, he’s certainly very highly rated indeed; which is clearly why Chelsea deemed it prudent to ‘splash out’ out on the 17-year-old and secure a deal early. Signed from Czech Republic side Sigma Olomouc, the financial breakdown of the deal remains – as always these days – ‘undisclosed’ but it is thought Olomouc could eventually make around £5million from the sale. With the likes of Arsenal, Inter Milan and Bayern Leverkusen also reportedly showing acute interest, Chelsea will be more than satisfied to have vanquished the competition and tied-up the deal.

Born in Czech Republic, 15/05/1993 (the same year of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the autonomous regions of Czech Republic and Slovakia – admittedly not in the slightest bit relevant here but, you know, some historical scene setting never hurts), Kalas has developed swiftly, thus catching the looming ogling gaze of Europe’s elite scouts. Playing primarily as a central defender, but also adept at right-back, he possesses pace and great athleticism. However he has only made one first-team appearances up to now, a 2-0 victory Slovan Liberec and a clean-sheet, and is still working his way through the youth system. Despite this, Chelsea academy boss Neil Bath has exalted his comfort on the ball for someone so young, whilst marking him out as a ‘very good one-on-one defender’.

However, Kalas is set to stay with Sigma Olomouc on loan for another season before joining up with Chelsea next year. This certainly seems the most very prudent option; giving Tomas time to develop further and gain match experience within his ‘comfort-zone’ and current system.

So, Chelsea have successfully secured a deal for a player with notable potential. It will be interesting to monitor his progress. Hopefully he can become a future Stamford Bridge luminary…watch this space (but not for too long, he’s only a nipper and it’ll get boring waiting; just forget all about him, push him right out your brain, and then when he rocks up in the Chelsea starting line-up in a few years it’ll be all the more sweet).
